Travelling is an amazing opportunity to try different flavours, types of food and even some things that seem a bit odd. Thailand is no different. As with any new place it takes a while to grow accustomed to the food in Thailand. My first bit of advice is this – take time to try and get used to the new spice palette and different flavours. How else will you know what you like?
There is a huge spectrum of different flavours and tastes in Thai food ranging from incredibly spicy to subtle and flavourful. What you will enjoy depends on your own, personal preference. There are a few meals I would recommend to any first-time traveller or teacher that are as delicious as they are ‘safe’, to prepare yourself for the change in diet.
1. Pad Thai: Pad Thai is a dish made from stir-fried rice noodles which usually contains eggs, fish sauce, garlic, roasted peanuts and shrimp. It is often served with a lime wedge and red chili pepper on the side. This is a lovely soft meal for absolutely anyone and has the exact right blend of many tasty flavours.
2. Fried Rice: Similar to Pad Thai, Fried Rice is also stir-fried with egg and numerous vegetables. Often it is made with chicken, pork or seafood. In Thailand it is traditionally made with rice, fish sauce, egg, green onion, tomatoes, garlic and your choice of meat but this may vary from place to place.
3. Tom Yum Kung: Tom Yum is a popular Thai soup that many people love. It can be described as both spicy and sour. Traditionally it is made with shrimp but can also contain chicken, pork and other meats – again it can vary from place to place.
Although the food in Thailand is extremely unique it is something that you will remember about your stay, however long. Take your time trying different meals and eat as much as you can – you are bound to find something you love.
