Thailand’s National Teachers’ Day is a significant Thai holiday observed annually on January 16th. Typically, schools close for both students and teachers to mark this occasion. Known as Wai Kru Day, it involves a traditional Thai ritual where students express respect and gratitude to their teachers. The celebration varies across schools, and the involvement of foreign teachers may differ.
In Thai culture, it is believed that every profession has a teacher, whether in fields like acting, drama, magic, astrology, or even boxing. Hence, the Wai Kru ceremony is essential to express worship and respect for teachers.
The day’s highlights encompass various activities, including religious ceremonies, paying respects to teachers, and engaging in activities that promote unity among educators.
A notable aspect of the celebration is the establishment of a yearly motto for teachers and Children’s Day by the Prime Minister or a prominent figure. This year, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin chose the following motto: “Broaden horizons, foster creativity, respect diversity, and join forces in building democracy.”
